Once your system has been installed and the filters primed (see instructions on this page), you can use your British Berkefeld® filter and enjoy your pure water.
Usage
British Berkefeld® filters are gravity filters. It is therefore the "weight" of the water that pushes it through the filter elements. The two tanks are nested, but there is no seal between them, because without air, the water would not be able to flow.
To avoid any water overflow, the correct method of use is to fill the top tank completely when the bottom tank is completely empty. Then use up all the filtered water in the lower tank before refilling.
Remarks :
- If the filters are not used for more than 3 days, we advise you to empty the lower tank completely and refill it.- If your cartridges are not used for more than a week, we recommend that you filter them without using the first few litres of water.
Maintenance
Maintenance essentially involves cleaning your tanks and filters from time to time.
Tank
Over time, deposits can form inside the tanks. These can be various sediments present in the water, or limescale.
To clean the tanks, we recommend using a mixture of warm water and household vinegar, without using any abrasive or corrosive products. To ensure that the filters do not come into contact with any cleaning products, we recommend that you uninstall them before carrying out any work on the tanks.
After cleaning, rinse the tanks thoroughly with clean water.
Warning: do not boil the purifier and do not use steam.
Filters
It is normal for the flow rate of filters to decrease over months of use. This is because the outer pores of the ceramic are blocked by particles suspended in the water. This is a normal phenomenon that can easily be remedied.
Remove the filters and run them under cold running water, brushing them with a scrubbing sponge, but without using any products.
Under no circumstances should filter elements be boiled.
Refit the filters and fill the top tank. Allow a small amount of water to run through before drinking.
Changing filter elements
To ensure optimum filtration, we recommend changing the filter elements every 6 months after installation. It's a good idea to make a note of the date when the new elements are installed, or to set an alert on your phone so that you don't forget the date when the filters need changing.
When changing filters, it is essential to commission them as explained in the assembly instructions, or by consulting this page. New filters must be primed before they are used for the first time.
